The Mission
NORTH TEXAS AYACUCHO MISSION
In 1994, PAMS initiated sponsorship of medical mission trips to Peru. After suffering the consequences of the war on terrorism, Ayacucho became one of the poorest regions of the country. The war devastated the precarious economy of the region and destroyed the very limited local infrastructure with the loss of thousands of human lives to the hands of terrorists and the military.
PAMS has organized medical missions in Ayacucho since 1996. A California-based group directed subsequent missions from 1998 until now. Dr. Pablo Uceda first joined the California group in 2006. Since 2007, Dr. Uceda has led a group of North Texas volunteers to Ayacucho to provide services for one week.
The North Texas Ayacucho Mission is sponsored by PAMS. It returns each year to Ayacucho for one week during the summer to provide medical, surgical, and educational assistance to its indigent population. During the annual trip we visit one of the local orphanages and provide gifts for children. We plan to expand the assistance to provide financial aid.
From 2007 to 2010, North Texas volunteers have been involved in the care of over 1000 patients and performed approximately 200 surgical procedures, mainly in children. The North Texas Ayacucho Mission has been privileged to serve the people in most need of medical attention and has provided education to the community and medical staff with great success.
